A Grandparent’s Legacy
by Cynthia L. Batson

What kind of heritage will you leave your children, grandchildren, and the generations to follow?  In Psalm 78:5-7 we read these words:  “He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.  Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands” (New International Version).

My grandfather was a Christian man who served as a pastor for many years.  He also was a writer of poetry, tracts, and numerous articles for Christian periodicals.  For many years he wrote the adult Sunday School quarterly for our denomination.

One day while I was looking through some of his old journals, I stumbled upon an obituary that he had written about his grandmother:  “My grandmother Wightman was born in Lyons, New York.  She married John Wightman in 1854, and had been a widow for some forty years when she died.  She and my grandfather were converted over fifty years ago.  It came about as follows:  She was much worried over a sick child, and could not sleep, when these words came to her, ‘Come to Jesus just now.’  It seemed like an audible voice, and had its effect.  She promised there and then to live differently, and it came to her that she should have William Wells and his wife come and pray for her the next day.  After this resolve she felt better and was soon asleep.  The next day Mr. and Mrs. Wells were sent for and came in to pray for her.  She also prayed, her first words being, ‘Oh Lord, take this heavy burden from my soul.’  Her husband was under conviction when she was, or about the same time, and also found peace in believing, but they had not many years to travel together in their new-found joy.  Death came in.  She was left with a large family and many cares; but during all the years that passed she was a true Christian, faithful to God and earnest in trying to win others for the Master.  I owe much to this godly grandmother, who believed in a real change of heart, and a consistent Christian walk.”

I began to think about where I would be if my great-great-grandmother had not had such a wonderful conversion experience and had not chosen to live a consistent Christian life.  Do you see how important it is to leave your precious children such a heritage?

I used to think I had a boring testimony, but after reading my grandfather’s words, I realize how blessed I am.
